This recipe is from the excellent cookbook ‘AT HOME with LYNN CRAWFORD’.

When I was interviewing well-known Canadian chef Lynn Crawford for a podcast, we chatted about our long friendship, her TV career, our joint project that raised $40,000 for a new kitchen at a Toronto homeless shelter for women called Sistering – and what we like to cook at home. Read more…

Pomegranate Seeds and Other Salad Secrets

January 20, 2011

I know the name Ruby Watchco keeps popping up in this blog – and it’s for good reason.

The meal Ross and I enjoyed there one Saturday night a couple of months ago was simply stellar, “simply” being the operative word. The uncomplicated, vibrant flavour and texture combos of each and every dish from the sensational salad with still warm buttermilk biscuits to a wondrous baked apple bathed in silky sabayon were all that good food should be.

It was the salad which was visibly being tossed to order by co-owner Lynn Crawford and brilliant co-chef Lora Kirk as they stood together at the kitchen pass that left a lasting impression. And I’ve been creating versions of it ever since. Read more…

Brussels Sprouts and Biscuits – a Ruby Watchco Update

December 12, 2010

In my last blog, I raved about a lively dinner Ross and I enjoyed one Saturday eve perched on bar stools at celeb chef Lynn Crawford’s hip’n’happening east-end eatery Ruby Watchco.

Once a sleuth, always a sleuth and the ingredients of Crawford and co-chef Lora Kirk’s amazing salad were perplexing me for several days after that excellent meal. There was a lot of stuff in there: endive, mixed baby greens, grape tomatoes, pumpkin seeds and cucumber were all identifiable. All were coated in a luscious, slightly sweet and refreshingly tangy vinaigrette. Usually, I take notes when eating out – often on a napkin or piece of paper I salvage from the depths of my purse. But on this evening, Ross and I were having too much fun for such distractions. So some sleuthing was in order. Read more…

Ruby Watchco: a Place to Watch

November 24, 2010

I’d heard a lot of buzz about Ruby Watchco, the latest hot-spot on Toronto’s restaurant scene, and was waiting for the hubbub to die down before I went for dinner.

However, I had reason to seek out its co-owner and my longtime buddy Lynn Crawford (she taught my daughter Ruthie to play pool many moons ago) for an event involving women chefs that I’m heading up to raise funds for the drop-in for homeless women called Sistering and, after much telephone tag, I caught up with her one mid-morning at her fledgling eatery located on Queen St. just east of Broadview.

I love dropping in on chefs especially when I wind up in the kitchen. Naturally, that happened on this mid-week day and soon I was embroiled in chatting with chef Lora Kirk as she was roasting some over-sized, decidedly delicious-looking beef ribs for that night’s menu. Read more…
